What Is SAP MCP? Model Context Protocol and SAP Integration

Understand SAP MCP Server, Model Context Protocol, the SAP Integration Suite MCP Gateway and the access controls needed for a secure integration.

What is SAP MCP?

SAP MCP refers to a Model Context Protocol approach that lets AI clients access SAP data, documents and permitted operations through a standard interface. MCP here is not the name of a traditional SAP component that sequences integration messages. It defines which context an agent may read, which tool it may invoke and which SAP system it may act on.

IDoc, RFC, OData and REST continue to support data exchange with SAP. MCP does not have to replace those services. It provides a shared discovery and invocation layer between an AI client and authorized enterprise tools.

How does an SAP MCP Server work?

The basic flow has three steps:

  1. The MCP client discovers the server’s exposed tools and context resources.
  2. When a user requests a task, the agent invokes a permitted tool within the target-system and user-permission boundaries.
  3. The connection layer records a useful audit event and returns the authorized result to the agent.

In the MCP ecosystem, tools represent operations, resources provide readable context and prompts can define reusable task patterns. Actual SAP access still depends on identity, roles, services and network controls. MCP does not remove SAP authorization.

SAP’s official documentation describes an MCP Server in Integration Suite as an artifact that exposes enterprise APIs and data to AI agents. The MCP Gateway provides security, traffic management and routing. See the SAP Integration Suite MCP documentation. Availability depends on the service plan; verify the feature in your environment.

What boundaries does NeKu AI SAP MCP Server define?

The NeKu AI SAP MCP Server treats information access and operation permissions as separate tool groups:

  • SAP Docs: Research and explanations based on permitted SAP documentation and enterprise information sources.
  • SAP Actions: Bounded queries and operation tools executed against the target SAP system within the connected user’s permissions.
  • Multiple systems: Named targets distinguish connections such as ECC and S/4HANA.
  • Access mode: Read-only, development and full-control modes limit available tools.
  • Auditing and masking: Tool calls can be traced, and sensitive fields can be kept out of output.

This describes the NeKu AI product approach. It is a different solution layer from SAP Integration Suite’s official MCP components, within the same Model Context Protocol ecosystem.

Which scenarios are suitable?

Useful SAP MCP candidates require more than conversation while allowing clear permission boundaries:

  • Explain an error using SAP documentation and permitted internal technical knowledge.
  • Query a report or record status on behalf of an authorized user.
  • Investigate a development request’s relationship to SAP objects and documentation.
  • Prepare an operation that requires approval and submit it for human review.
  • Combine permitted context from multiple SAP systems in one AI workflow.

For scenarios that change production data, define the tool, user permissions, audit records and any human approval together. An MCP connection alone does not grant operation permission.

SAP MCP integration checklist

Answer these questions first:

  1. Which SAP system and client are targeted?
  2. Which resources are read-only and which tools can perform operations?
  3. Which user identity and role execute tool calls?
  4. How are sensitive fields removed from model input and output?
  5. Which calls require approval and an audit record?
  6. How are failures and timeouts handled?

These questions clarify the security and operating model before protocol selection. See our permission-aware SAP MCP design guide for separating reads, preparation and persistent changes, mapping user context to SAP permissions and defining audit fields.

How do n8n, Integration Suite and MCP fit together?

n8n orchestrates workflow steps, Integration Suite governs enterprise integrations and APIs, and MCP exposes tools and context to AI clients. They can be used together. Our integration-layer decision guide covers the responsibilities, licensing questions and pilot acceptance criteria.
