Evaluating SAP Joule and a Custom SAP AI Assistant

Evaluate standard Joule assistants, custom development with Joule Studio and independent SAP AI solutions using process scope, access, data location and ownership.

To decide between Joule and a custom SAP AI assistant, first define the work. Standard Joule assistants, custom development with Joule Studio and a solution on an independent platform are three evaluation paths. A need for custom development does not automatically require leaving the SAP ecosystem.

SAP’s current Joule Agents and Joule Assistants description covers multistep tasks across SAP and non-SAP systems alongside custom agent development. Avoid building a comparison around assumptions such as “Joule only works inside standard SAP screens” or “non-SAP data always requires another product.”

Product sources were checked on 14 October 2026. Scope, availability and licensing must also be verified against the selected SAP application, service plan, region and contract.

Three evaluation paths

ApproachFirst questionEvidence to request
Standard Joule Agents and Joule AssistantsDoes an available role-specific or process capability meet the need?Availability in your tenant, supported application and demonstration of the user’s actual task
A custom solution in Joule StudioCan the required agent, application or workflow be built in SAP’s development environment?Accessible version, data and service connectivity, runtime, testing and governance scope
A custom SAP assistant on an independent platformDoes the existing architecture, model choice or operating model require a separate solution?Actual connection path, user permissions, data flow, maintenance and support boundaries

The Joule Studio product page describes building custom AI agents, applications and workflows. At the time of review, it offered trial-opening notifications for the new experience. This does not prove access for every organization or identical features across versions. Verify your tenant’s access and the relevant product version separately.

Start with a task list

A purchasing specialist finding a procedure, a developer requesting an ABAP explanation and an assistant creating an SAP record have different requirements. Evaluating them under one generic “AI assistant” label can hide these differences during a demo.

Use the same tasks for each candidate:

  • Find an answer in an authorized source and show the source.
  • Preserve different data scopes for two different users.
  • State when information is missing and route the question appropriately.
  • Obtain required human approval before an action.
  • Surface a failed service call and handle retries.

This list defines evidence to request during the pilot. It does not assert that every candidate already supports every capability.

How should data location and model choice be assessed?

Data remaining in SAP does not prove that no data reaches another service. Review the question, retrieved context, model input, output, audit records and backups separately. Show which fields move, where they are processed, how long they are retained and who can access them.

The NeKu AI enterprise SAP AI approach covers cloud and on-premise positioning. A deployment option does not establish that every model request is processed locally. Verify the actual provider and routing before making a data-residency claim.

Permissions and human approval apply to every solution

Assess SAP access against the user role, target system, organizational scope and requested operation. Signing in to a chat interface does not imply permission to change an SAP record. Our permission-aware SAP MCP guide explains enforcing the boundary on every call.

Test more than the successful path. Include an unauthorized user, out-of-scope data, an answer with insufficient sources and a rejected approval. For consequential operations such as payments, master-data changes or permission changes, identify the responsible person and approval workflow.

How should licensing and operations be compared?

TopicQuestion for the proposal
Product scopeAre the standard assistant, custom development environment and runtime included together?
UsageHow are users, operations, capacity or AI usage units calculated?
Models and infrastructureAre model usage, SAP BTP services and separate infrastructure included?
ImplementationWho owns source connections, testing, user acceptance and production rollout?
OperationsWho owns upgrades, monitoring, incident response and support?
ExitHow can data, workflows and configuration move to another environment?

Avoid reducing the comparison to an assumed monthly amount. Compare SAP Business AI pricing information and each candidate’s written proposal for the same scenario and support scope.

How does a single-task pilot help?

An illustrative starting task is: “Answer an SAP question using a corporate source the user is permitted to access, show that source and stop when the request is outside scope.” This is a testing method, rather than a customer result.

Define answer quality, source accuracy, permission violations, user acceptance and operational ownership before testing. The result should support a decision to continue, change scope or stop. A fluent answer alone does not establish production readiness.
